Each spring the local town hosts a two week long arts fair, ‘Wigton’s spring fling’. With the event coming to a close last week I now have a minute to reflect on the cultural buzz!

The event started life as Wigton Windows, so called, as the town’s shops turn over their displays to presenting the work of local artists.

This year, the event was bigger and brighter than ever. Over 40 shops and businesses throughout the town displayed the work of internationally-acclaimed artists alongside local talent. With the very best of Cumbria’s skills and imagination on display.

Its always an honour for me to be invited to display at the event. Brian Cambell, the event founder, was my A level art teacher. Brian was instrumental in guiding me to becoming the artists/craftsman I am today. A renowned painter himself, Brian is a leading figure in the promotion of local art. Brian also runs the towns Fountain Gallery, a cooperative of 30 local artists, from painters to ceramicists. If you’re passing through Wigton, its definitely worth a visit!

This year I was allocated my own shop! This used to be the Monkey Tree cafe, but is currently being refitted for another business. Although not right in the centre I had plenty of space to display. Setting up felt like being a shop owner but with the art for display only, I didn’t need to attend each day. Interest comes via phone or email.

Wigton is already a busy market town. However, the event adds a certain colour and vibrancy to the town centre with locals and visitors alike congregating outside the shops and attending the exhibitions.
