Look at these burrs!

I’ve finally made progress with my stack of elm and sorted through a few of the logs. It’s been a long time since I’ve had timber this good, so thought I’d share the photo’s…

With some of the logs weighing over two tons, it’s been a slow and arduous task. Each pieces has to be reduced down to size, before I can even consider the blanks. With the choice bits processed and put to one side, I’ve then the next job to do – splitting a mountain of firewood!

This large crotch of elm has a lovely burr on one side…

Sliced down the center and ready to be cut into blanks. It should make a selection of very large bowls…

The majority of the burrs will be turned into my natural edge designs. With thin walls and gnarly spikes, they should look quite impressive. The photo below shows some of these sections, which I’ve removed from the pile of logs…

After a bit of turning, I’ve roughed out some natural edge blanks…

The top image shows one of the larger pieces. More photo’s will follow, as I sort through the rest of the wood…
